This paper addresses writer Itsuki Hiroyuki’s 1966 debut novel Farewell to Moscow Misfits through the lens of middlebrow novels, jazz and repatriates. draws from Itsuki’s personal experience being repatriated colonial Korea after war visiting Soviet Union in mid-1960s. was unique for its time representing jazz, music, youth “stilyagi” counterculture Union. movement roughly contemporaneous with student 1960s Japan. period also saw popularization “middlebrow novel”—an ambiguous term that used describe literature outside established pure/popular dichotomy.
